Effective Tweeting for Student Journalists

From ch. 6 – Advancing the Story 3rd Edition 2015 – Wenger/Potter

Twitter allows for 140 characters, but best to keep tweets around 100-characters to allow for comments on RTs (re-tweets).

First words of tweet are IMPORTANT – one study finds readers decide within the first 11-characters whether or not to read the rest of the tweet.

Hashtags and Handles add value: quotes from your interview subjects add value just as they do in traditional media reporting, and if the interview subject has a Twitter handle, include it in your tweet.

Hashtags (#) can help Twitter users find more information or reporting on a story.  You’ll want to check to see if a hashtag you create is already in use.  For journalists, it’s generally accepted to limit use to one or two hashtags in tweet.
