Honoring the Excellence of Assumption English Majors

By Anna Schroeder:

On Tuesday April 2, The English Department at Assumption College held its annual Sigma Tau Delta induction ceremony. Sigma Tau Delta is the “English honor society for students at accredited colleges and universities that grant baccalaureate or higher degrees.” This society is “dedicated to fostering literacy and all aspects of the discipline of English.”

This year, the Assumption chapter of Sigma Tau Delta nominated twenty new members into this international society with a ceremony to celebrate their achievement.

The ceremony took place in La Maison Auditorium. Friends and family of the new inductees as well as Assumption faculty gathered to watch.

Associate Professor Dr. Becky DiBiasio welcomed everyone, then introduced the guest speaker, Kellie Duquette. Duquette graduated from Assumption in 2018, and came back to share her experiences in Sigma Tau Delta as well as her life after graduation. “You don’t know how lucky you are to be at this school, getting this education, with the aid of this society,” Duquette said in her speech.

Jordan Gablaski, new inductee and member from the class of 2020, said, “my favorite part of the ceremony was the speech by the graduate from Assumption. She was really inspiring and well spoken.”

Each new inductee received a certificate stating their membership to the International Honor Society, as well as a pin they can wear on their gowns on the day of graduation.

Rose Horell, also a newly inducted member of Sigma Tau Delta, expressed her excitement for the opportunities this society will offer her.

“I’m excited to be part of Sigma Tau Delta because of the internship opportunities and scholarships associated with the English Honor Society. I think these will give me a really good chance to challenge myself as a writer and scholar of English literature,” Horell said.

Sigma Tau Delta gives many great opportunities for its members to apply for scholarships, internships and other learning experiences.

“More than being just a name to put on a resume, the Society seems to sincerely care about offering its members the resources they need to succeed,” Horell said.
