By: Amanda Benson:

Morgan O’Donnell is Assumption College’s newest 1,000 point scorer. As of February 9, 2019, O’Donnell has successfully succeeded in maintaining her goal and surpassing all odds that coaches and fans alike thought, to score 1,000 points. She has been on the Women’s Basketball team at Assumption College for the past four years and has been a valuable asset to the team since her freshman season. Now, she is the 24th woman in Assumption College Women’s Basketball history to score her 1,000 career points. According to Assumption Women’s Basketball statistics, O’Donnell has scored an average of 16.4 points per game this season. O’Donnell is not only a 1,000 point career scorer at Assumption, but she also holds the record for the most points in a single game at 39 points, surpassing the old record by 5 points. This record-breaking game was played in the beginning of the 2018-2019 season against Merrimack College.

In an interview with O’Donnell, she commented about her major and her time at Assumption College. She is a Psychology Major with a concentration in the brain, body and cognition. She has a minor in Human Services and Rehabilitation Services at Assumption College and plans to apply to Physical Therapy school following graduation in May of 2019. She has been supported by her parents, Barbara and John, throughout her career along with her sister, Madison. O’Donnell’s love for the game started at age 5. She fondly remembered, “We won our first state championship in 4th grade and after the game, I ran into the stands and jumped on my dad” (see picture below). O’Donnell’s father has been there as her biggest and proudest fan throughout her career. She said, “My dad has always pushed me. I quit basketball in 7th and 8th grade just to get back at him for being tough on me. I know now that it was because he wanted me to be the best I possibly could and I thank him for it all the time.”

Commenting on her 1,000 career points, O’Donnell stated, “In the moment I was scared that all my fans and supporters would have been at the game for nothing. Once I scored my 2nd 3-pointer at the start of the game and I made the 1,000 points, I was so relieved. Just look at the video that you have.” Indeed, you can see O’Donnell’s shoulders relax and her whole demeanor change. Congratulations on such an amazing accomplishment. Everyone here at Assumption College is extremely proud of you and always will be cheering from the sidelines.
