On Thursday February 15th, 2018, Laura Ingraham, reporter for Fox News, attempted to publicly disgrace two NBA stars by telling them to “Shut up and dribble” after LeBron James and Kevin Durant made comments about the president.
James and Durant were both interviewed by ESPN reporter Cari Champion, and discussed some of the hardships African-Americans face in America, as well as President Trump and his Twitter account.
LeBron James said “The No. 1 job in America, the appointed person is someone who doesn’t understand the people…”. James is one of the best and well-known basketball players in the world, and makes an impact both on and off the court. He is known for his charitable works, through The LeBron James Family Foundation.
The LeBron James Family Foundation mission is, “to positively affect the lives of children and young adults through education and co-curricular educational initiatives. We believe that an education and living an active, healthy lifestyle is pivotal to the development of children and young adults.” LeBron is also interested in helping close to home, in Akron, Ohio. His foundation is supporting 1,100 kids to attend the University of Akron for free. James really believes in giving back to the community that supported him and brought him up.
Laura Ingraham responded to their comments by saying, “It’s always unwise to seek political advice from someone who gets paid $100 million a year to bounce a ball…Keep the political comments to yourselves. … Shut up and dribble.”
LeBron James responded by saying, “We will definitely not shut up and dribble.” He said in an interview during All Star Weekend that he “means too much to society. He means too much to the youth.”
Ingraham received feedback that her comments were racist. She disagreed and said “there was no racial intent in my remarks… Race has nothing to do with it.” Durant disagreed, saying, “To me, it was racist…I feel sorry for her, because she doesn’t understand.”
Ingraham has not been punished for her comments. There have been some arguments that her job is to start debates. Therefore, her comments may or may not have been her opinion, but just her reading the screen in front of her trying to start a debate about the NBA and Politics.
