The Assumption College Football Team defeated Pace University 52-0 Friday night in an all-around team effort. The Greyhounds had six different players take the ball into the end zone, helping to put up their largest scoring outbreak of the season.
Pace came to Assumption with a 0-5 record, looking to steal a win at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Assumption’s campus. After blocking a field goal attempt by Assumptions Tad Beuchart in the first quarter, Pace looked to be in position to make this game competitive. However this was short lived. A 49-yard run by senior running back De’Ontray Johnson put the ball at the Pace 5 yard line, and set the Greyhounds up for their first score of the game with a one-yard touchdown run by Kevin Ihlefeld a couple plays later.
The Hounds extended their lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter after senior wide out Edward Frazier caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Vasey. The touchdown was set up with a Charles Reid interception for Assumption.
The Greyhounds excelled in every aspect of the game. They created 5 turnovers for the Pace offense, with preseason All-American Derrick Mann recovering 2 fumbles, including a fumble return for a touchdown. James Ward put an exclamation point on the game in the 4th quarter with his second TD in the game to put the Greyhounds up 52-0.
Ward(2), Call, Ihlefeld, Frazier, Jamerson, and Mann all scored for Assumption. Vasey finished with 3 TD passes and only one interception. This was two wins in a row for Assumption, who increases their record to 3-3 as they head to Merrimack next week to take on the 3-3 Warriors, as both teams try to remain in the top half of the standings in the Northeast 10 conference. Assumption is focused on their upcoming game against Merrimack. After asking Edward Frazier about the win, he simply honed his inner Bill Belichick and said, “We’re on to Merrimack.”
